This volume completes Monsignor Knox's translation of the Bible. The New Testament appeared first, some years ago, and the nrst volume of the Old Testament was reviewed here a few months ago. The three volumes are obtainable in uniform edition. They represent a considerable achievement in translation and one which will give pleasure and enlightenment to readers of all creeds. Opening this volume, for example, the reader is plunged into the great drama of Job, and he can read and appreciate its power, perhaps for the first time. For many the unfamiliarity of the language of tne older renditions is a handicap which is not compensated for by the rhythms and the beauty of. say, the Authorised Version. To them. Mgr. Knox's translation means a fresh revelation of the variety of the contents of this greatest library of books. It is in the historical and narrative passages that the translation is most successful. The language is clear, dignified, and flexible. It is in the poetry of the Psalms and in the higher flights of the prophets that there is a consciousness of something lost. Even here, understanding is increased so that the matchless words, when they are returned to, are read with knowledge as well as with emotion. ~ . , , The translation is authorised, for those of the Roman Catholic faith, fpr private 'Use only, but it may be said that this is how it should be used by anyone—not as something to replace the older versions—these must endure as part of the heritage of our language and culture —but as a supplementary aid, invaluable in itself.
