Taieri Airport's New Record For Plane Movements

Taieri airport had its record day for arrivals and departures of commercial aircraft on Wednesday when 31. aircraft movements, were logged. Apart from the normal NAC flights, this was due to the arrival of the special planes carrying Empire Games personnel. The routine NAC Dakota, Lodestar and Dominie flights accounted for seven arrivals and seven departures. The NAC also used two Dakotas, a Lodestar and an ' Electra to bring Empire Games ~ personnel south and these were " supplemented by two RNZAF j Dakotas and a Devon. In addition, an RNZAF Mosquito and an Oxford arrived during the day, together with two Procters carrying ambulance cases. Had Aero Club flights been added, the tally for the day would have been still v higher. The airport was also busy yesterday clearing the additional aircraft which had stayed overnight. The, work of the control tower staff over the two days was considerably eased by the good weather which permitted operations under visual conditions. 1 The . previous record for one day’s • commercial aircraft at Taieri was thought to be 28 movements.
