FINE PERFORMANCES
Empire Games Athletes At Invercargill Two Records Bettered PA INVERCARGILL, Feb. 16. Two Empire Games records were bettered on Rugby Park today, when the United Kingdom and Canadian teams opened their tour of the South Island. ’ „ , Mrs Dorothy Tyler (England), who won the Empire title at Auckland with a jump of sft 3in, broke her own record with a jump of sft 4in. Mrs Tyler attempted to clear sft sin, but was unsuccessful. The other record bettered was by the Scottish hammer thrower, D. Clark, who threw 163 ft lljin in competition and 170 ft in a special attempt. His first attempt of 163 ft lljin was an inch and a-quarter further than his record at Auckland. However, neither of these will be recognised, for the throwing ring did not conform with the regulations. The Invercargill junior sprinter, C. L. Davidson, off five yards, won the Men’s 220 Yards final by two yards from Shenton (England) in 22.8 sec on a slowish track. A Downie, a junior from Riversdale, threw the hammer 138 feet, one foot further than his coach, the New Zealand representative, J G. Leckie, threw. Although obviously travel weary, the athletes performed well before a crowd of more than 7000 in perfect conditions. , , „ Brilliant cycling by the vising English, Scottish and Welsh Empire Games cyclists and a creditable showing by local riders, particularly W. Hoffman, thrilled the largest crowd ever to be present at the Kew Park Stadium tonight. C. Cartwright (England), winner of the Empire Games individual sprint and second in the same event at the last world championships, unfortunately punctured twice in the Five Miles Invitation Scratch event and in the 4000 Metres Teams’ Pursuit Race. In the second heat of the Mile Invitation Race the local scratch rider, W. Hoffman, defeated Campbell (Wales) and Hamilton (Scotland) in a close finish. Hoffman’s time (2min 13 l-ssec) broke the track record. In the final Hoffman again beat the visiting riders. Riding in perfect coordination, Geldard (England), Campbell and Hamilton took the major places in a Five-mile Invitation event, finishing about half a lap ahead of the local riders. , _ . Champions from England, Scotland, Canada and Wales took part in an international swimming meet at the Tepid Baths tonight. The water was fast, and some exceptionally good times were registered, in most cases the fastest ever recorded in a Southland pool. Margaret Wellington (England) won the 100 Yards Freestyle in 62 l-ssec, breaking the New Zealand record for women, and Irene Strrag (Canada) registered 76 4-ssec, swimming butterfly in the 100 Yards Breaststroke, which betters the New Zealand record.
