TRENCH FRAY WINS

MIDSUMMER HANDICAP WINGATUI SUCCESSES Special to Daily Times CHRISTCHURCH, Feb. 5. Some excellent racing was seen at the Canterbury Jockey Club’s summer meeting, and a strong visiting contingent captured half the programme, Wingatui stables having a very successful time with three wins—two by Mr G. J. Bartons Brutus and Kosher, while F. Shaw s stable won with Jamell and was second with Fine Night. ' . Fine Night’s Late Run The Midsummer Handicap had a field of 14, and it was a good race. Trench Fray and Fine Night were also prominent. Valley Gold had drifted back, but he started to move up a little further on, and he was handily placed at the five-furlong post. Western Front and Flying Control led round the home turn, with Trench Fray, Responsive, and Trinidad still prominent in the next, bunch. Fine Night was at the head of the others, with Valley Gold improving his position. Western Front was beaten starting the last furlong. Trench Fray then challenged, and though Fine Night made a brilliant finishing run, Trench Fray beat him by a neck. Flying Control was a length away, with over a length to Valley Gold. Then close up came Signal Officer, who put in great work over the last three furlongs. All Alone and Responsive headed the others. Robinfaye was last. Eulogize and Western Front being Just in front of her. _ . # Craven Plate The Craven Plate, the second " leg " of the double, saw Theocritus and Whitley leading Flying Orders and Resolute early, with Bonny Royal and Western Winner handy. Resolute was in front starting the last furlong, Theocritus and Whitley having dropped out, while Faithful Pal had joined Flying Orders, with Flying Sovereign finishing well. Faithful Pal looked a winner more than 50 yards from the post, and he beat Resolute decisively by a head. Flying Sovereign was a length back, followed by Flying Orders, who tired. Balkis finished strongly in fifth place, with a gap to Whitley, Open Sky, Theocritus, and Western Winner. Easy for Jamell Wandering Minstrel set the pace in the High-weight Handicap, Coxswain and Indian Morn joining him at the end of hair a mile. Jamell, after losing several lengths at the start, moved up gradually and joined the leader at the entrance to the straight.
