SUCCESSFUL CARNIVAL

ST. KILDA IMPROVEMENT SOCIETY

If materials and labour are available, the St. Kilda Improvement Society expects to be able to spend £6OO on the children's playground at the beach as a result of the carnival which ended on Saturday night. New devices worth £6OO are at present on order. “We hope to make St. Kilda the playground of the South Island." said the secretary of the society. Mr G. T. Hopwood. The society intends to have the ground floodlit, and it is hoped that by this means vandalism in the district will be reduced. An example of vandalism was provided on Saturday afternoon when .the children's paddling pool had to be emptied and 11 barrel-loads of bricks, tins, bottles, sticks and kelp were removed. Each time the pool is cleaned, the society must pay to have it refilled. , Mr Hopwood expressed the society's thanks to the St. Kilda Surf Club members, who assisted in the running of the carnival, the bands and marching teams which presented programmes. and the Dunedin police. Next Saturday a model engineering exhibition will' be held on the ground.
