Close Finish In Winton Cup Handicap

STEEPLES TO GAY MUSIC Special to the Daily Times INVERCARGILL, Feb. 5. The largest dividend on a doubles totalisator paid at a Southland meeting was hoisted at the Winton Jockey Club's summer meeting yesterday. when the Waicoe-Naughty Lady combination paid £222 Is for £l. It was a day of form upsets and dividends at long odds. Shelbash set the ball rolling \%hen he won his division of the Trial Plate and paid £ll4 13s on the win machine. Waicoe’s Winton Cup win price was £24 17s, and Haughty Boa was also at double-figure odds.

Waicoe gave the Invercargill trainer, J. A. Rowland, his fourth success in the Winton Cup, in which riding tactics won the day. Waicoe put a big break on his field in the middle stages and over the last half mile he had the opposition in trouble. Rowland's earlier Winton Cup winners were Celerity II (twice) and Great Coon. The Riverton owner-trainer M. Corkery won a double with Naughty Lady anci Haughty Boa, both of which were ridden by the stable apprentice H. W. Skinner, who was on a third winner in Night Abbey. The meeting was held under excellent weather conditions and on a firm track.

Waieoe. one of the outsiders of the ifield for the Winton Cup Handicap, won from end to end. Into the back Waieoe and Winning Cheer had opened up a lead of six lengths, which they increased to 10 lengths at. the five, where Aurora. Mount Barker. Jan. Defendant, and Bragden headed the others. Waieoe was a length clear of Winning Cheer at the half rnile, where Anzora was attempting to bridge the gap five lengths away and clear of Mount. Barker, Defendant. Jan and Special Flight. At the two Anzora had joined Waieoe in the lead and at the straight, entrance they were two lengths clear of Jan. Mount Barker, Defendant, Sea Flower, and Royal Sal. while Winning Cheer went back through his field quickly. Anzora looked to have Waicoe’s measure with 100 yards to run but Waieoe came on again to win by a neck. Jan was a length back third, with Mount Barker half a'length away fourth. There was- a break to Royal Sal, Sea Flower, Aganev, Special Flight and Defendant. AT GOOD ODDS Haughty Boa wgs another winner at good odds when she beat the hack sprinters in the Awarua Handicap decisively. Narrow View took no part and Banquet and Incentive began slowly. Flying Trixie and Plausible headed a bunched field inside the first furlong, and across the top Flying Trixie was racing clear of Plausible, with Haughty Boa, Sailing Pal and Winning Gem next. Salma Royal and The Saint were both checked and lost several lengths. Plausible headed Flying Trixie at the turn and at the straight entrance Plausible was being challenged by Haughty Boa. with Flying Trixie, Winning Gem, Sailing Pal, and Salma Royal next. Haughty Boa had the upper hand with 100 j’ards to run and she beat Plausible decisively by two lengths, with Winning Gem a length back third. Sailing Pal was beaten in a photo finish into fourth place with Flying Trixie, Incentive and Banquet next. A SOUND DISPLAY Gay Music gave a sound display to win the Winton Steeplechase, after taking charge with five furlongs to run. Zintui and Victory Star ran off at the first fence, where Minstrel Boa dropped his rider. Jump Off fell near the five furlongs, and Silver Flight baulked at the home turn. With a round to go Sunny Course was three lengths clear of Irish Pal, with Whisk two lengths back and Turf Topic and Knight Crusader next, and a gap to Gay Music, Golden Crown, and Vanity King. Racing past the five, Gay Music ran to the front, and across the top Knight Crusader and Turf Topic and then Vanity King moved up quickly. At the second to last fence Gay Music had little to spare from Vanity King and Turf Topic, with Knight Crusader and Sunny Course at the head of a strung-out field. At the last fence the order was the same, and in the run home Gay Music held off Turf Topic bv half a length, with Vanity King half a length back third. There was a break of 10 lengths to Knight Crusader, with Sunnv Course, Battle Royal, Irish Pal, and Whisk at intervals. AN EASY WIN Naughty Lady completed the second " leg ’’ of the double by winning the Flying Handicap in easy style. Haughty Dick dropped his rider at the barrier, and Geisha Girl and Sea Venture began slowly. Naughty Lady was smartest out, but Glenlivet soon ran to the front, and at the half he was clear of Naughty Lady, Balmoral, Young Bob, Sea Venture, Mr Micawber, Extra Flight., and Sterling Lad. Glenlivet and Naughty Lady were clear into the straight from Balmoral, Young Bob, Sea Venture, Extra Flight, and Mr Micawber. In the run home Naughty Lady soon settled the issue, and she came on to beat Glenlivet decisively by a length, with Balmoral half a length back third. Mr Micawber was four lengths away fourth, with Sterling Lad, Young Bob, Sea Venture, and Extra Flight next. CENTURY DIVIDEND PAYER After being slow on the journey, Night Abbev won the first division of the Trial Plate narrowly but well. Kleve got away badly. At the straight entrance Urbino was being challenged by Night Abbey, with Dolwyn handy ahead of Bush Robin, Double Boa, and Field Day. Urbino stuck to his guns in the run home, but Night. Abbey finished the better to win by a neck. Dolwyn was two lengths back third, with a break to Bush Robin, Double Boa, Boswell's Pride, and Irish Royalty,. There was an upset in the second division, when Shelbash, the outsider of the field, returned a win dividend of £ll4 13s. Chieftainess was the smartest out, and racing across the top she was clear of Culton, Hillane. Lorneville, Narrow View, Nadir Shah, and Shelbash in a closerunning field. Chieftainess was still in charge at the home turn and led into the straight from Shelbash, Nadir Shah, St. Moritz, Hillane and Supermarme. Shelbash soon had the measure of the leaders but he had to be hard ridden to hold off St. Moritz, who finished strongly on the inside but failed by half a head to get up. Hillane. was two lengths away third. Nadir Shah was fourth ahead of Culton and Home Circle. NIGHT ABBEY’S DOUBLE Night Abbey won ber second race for the day when she won the Benmore Hack Handicap over nine furlongs in runaway style. Farrago began slowly, and racing into the back, Golden Winner was clear of Gay Gitana and Correct Change together, with Alsvider, Oscillate, and Young Yvette racing abreast and Benevoius and Night Abbey next. Uist moved from the back racing to the five. Golden Winner and Gay Gitana led round the turn where Night Abbey continued her run 'and she led into the straight from Gav Gitana, Uist, Young Yvette, Alsvider, Golden Winner, and Farrago. Night Abbey made every post a winning one in the run home and she came right away to win easily by six lengths from Uist. who beat Gav Gitana by a length. Young Yvette was right up in fourth place, with Farrago, Loch Lennox, Bcnevolus and Oscillate next.
