TARAKAN EXPLOSION
ANOTHER VICTIM SUCCUMBS HOSPITAL STAFF’S EFFORTS IN VAIN NZPA—Copyright Rec. 8.40 p.m. SYDNEY. Jan. 27. Another victim of the Tarakan explosion, making six fatalities in all, died today. He was a young able seaman from South Australia, and his death ended an unremitting struggle by the hospital staff to 'save his life. Nearly 20 pints of blood were pumped into his veins in an endeavour to stave off the effects of shock. His mother and fiancee were present when he died.
Doctors are fighting to saye the life of the ship’s cook, from Queensland, who had about two-thirds of his skin burned from his body. Doctors say that if he lives another 24 hours he will have a bare chance of survival. Three others are in a dangerous condition. Over 2000 people jammed the footpath outside a city chapel today before the funeral service for five Tarakan victims. Hundreds of wreaths followed the bodies to the cemetery.
