DETERMINED TO DROWN

SURF LIFE-SAVERS REBUFFED SWIMMER FORCIBLY DRAGGED FROM WATER N ZPA—Copyright SYDNEY, Jan. 23. The efforts of life-savers to rescue a swimmer who was heading determinedly out to sea were almost foiled by the swimmer himself, who angrily ordered them to leave him alone. A member of the surf patrol at North Bondi saw the man 100 yards out and swimming strongly when other surfers were close to the shore. The Australian surf ski champion, K. Sawyer, investigated, and returned to say that the man had ordered him away, and had resisted Sawyer’s efforts to drag him on to the ski. A surf boat 'then gave chase, and caught the man 700 yards offshore. The man was then very weak, and was gulping water, but he turned away from the boat at each attempt to rescue him. Finally crew members seized him by the hair and arm, and dragged him aboard. The man, who was an English migrant, was later charged with attempting to commit suicide.

“ His lack of consideration annoyed us,” said one surf club member. “If he had sufceeded it would have been a reflection on our work. It is hard enough pulling out people who are keen about living.”
