“HIGH-HANDED” ATTITUDE OF GERMAN AUTHORITIES TOWARD WESTERN POWERS
New Zealand Press Association—Copyright Rec. 11 p.m. LONDON, Jan. 23. The week-end news from Germany—the de-rationing of petrol without consulting the Allies, and the birth of a German Nationalist political party at Kassel—made front-page banner headlines in British newspapers this morning.
The Daily Mail’s headlines were: “Germans Get High-handed.” The Daily Mail quoted a senioe, British official at Bonn who said Germany’s decision to de-ration petrol without reference to the Western Powers was “typical of the high-handed dealings we are now meeting.”
The Daily Herald carried headlines: “A new Fuhrer raises the ‘ Ein Reich ’ cry.” It added that the new party was born to the stamping of jackboots, shouts of “ Heil,” and the singing of “ Deutschland Über Alles.” The Daily Mirror, in a story headed “ The Truth About Germany’s Food,” said: “Germany has not de-rationed. She has thrown away coupons and fair shares, substituting rationing by price and full stomachs for the rich. There is no glut, simply—because of high prices—lack of demand. The whole food situation there is criminally unfair. Anyone who tries to make the Britsih public believe it is a heaven due to free enterprise is a liar.”
