WAITAKI ROAD BRIDGE
Interest Of Government
Letters From Member For District Special to the Daily Times
OAMARU, Jan. 23.
His constant trips over the Waitaki River during the election campaign had impressed on him the need for better access to his constituents, Mr T. L. Hayman, M.P., stated in a letter received at a meeting to-night of the North Otago Automobile Association. This was in reply to a letter drawing Mr Hayman’s attenion to the need tor urgent” consideration of a new road bridge over the Waitaki River. The Minister of Works, Mr Goosman, had advised him, Mr Hayman added that the association’s representations had been noted, and the Minister would take an early opportunity of considering the subject. Mr Goosman said the association could be assured that its representations would receive the careful consideration of the Covernment. The Minister’s assurance could be considered satisfactory, said the president, Mr W. M. Richardson. “ I heard of one case during the Christmas holidays of a motorist with a caravan having to go to Kurow to cross the Waitaxi River,” Mr Richardson said. “ inis is only one case, and others must have occurred.” He thought that it was one of the most important roadworks confronting the authorities. The fact that so many other organisations had discussed the proposal since it was first mooted by the association had shown that it was a matter of wide interest, Mr J. C. Kirkness said. In the interests of transport in New Zealand, the association should continue its endeavours to obtain a better bl'idge. It was decided to make arrangements to meet the Minister on his next visit to the South and to thank Mr Hayman for his efforts.
