PASTEL SUITS

Favoured At Forbury Park Meeting

Glorious sunshine for the first day of the summer meeting at Forbury Parle on Saturday brought out women patrons in a lively display of summer dresses, suits and coats. Though light clothes predominated, the early boisterous wind caused many to come clearly equipped for. a possible change in the weather. Tailored suits in pastel shades of caramel, pink and blue linen and gabardine were worn by some of the smartest racegoers; whilst trim dresses in light crepe, and ensembles in navy blue and white were other popular and attractive choices. 'There were, too, some more elaborate toilettes, but Forbury Park, or indeed any race meeting, is not the ideal setting for taffeta cocktail dresses, especially when they are accompanied by fur capes and fussy hats. Hats, in general, were close-fitting, made of light-coloured straws and felts trimmed with a deftly-placed bow of ribbon or a whisper of veiling. Pearls, the jewellery fashion which seems to look right almost everywhere, were favoured by a great majority. White shoes, bags, and gloves were also much worn, and here and there lizard skin shoes and handbags made their appearance. A grey suit and hat. worn with a limegreen blouse and gloves looked cool and pleasant; another, a plain grey suit in gabardine, was worn with a blush pink straw hat and pink glovej. Two of the younger set wore linen dresses in cinnamon brown and white stripes, with brown and white semi-sports shoes, white hats and bags. Among those present were: Mrs W. Mackenzie, Edfendale; Mrs N. R. Brown, Invercargill; Mrs J. P. Kalaugher, Auckland; Mrs C. L. Rhodes, Christchurch; Mrs L. M. Renton, Christchurch; Mrs P. J Twomey, Christchurch; Mrs T.
