IMPROVING SPRINTER

CASTLEBRAE SURPRISES AT TRENTHAM

Castlebrae recorded his most important success to date when he won the Telegraph Handicap at Trentham on Saturday He was a fair wav back until the straight was reached and in a torrid finish he narrowly beat Super Vaals. The previous week he had spreadeagled the field in the Newmarket Handicap at the Pahiatua meeting, beating Carnegie and Fleetwood. So far this season he has had 14 starts for four wins and four fourth placings. His other wins were in the Taratani Handicap at Carterton at his first appearance for the season, when he beat Garry and Coshona, and in the Oete Handicap at Woodville on November 26 when lie accounted for Phalamint and Da Vinci. Castlebrae is a six-year-old gelding byRobin Goodfellow from Arena, by Cockpit from Wiwini, by Tea Tray from Pireaus bv Demosthenes from Formula, bv Hotchkiss from Formo, by Sterlingworth from the imported mare Pulchra. Arena is also the dam of winners in Lady Nahleen, The Stormovik, and Lady Mvrtle. all of whom are trained by their breeder. G. S. Walton, of Otaki. Castlebrae is still at a bandy place in the weights and it will not be surprising if lie adds some more good stakes to bis tally before the end of the season.
