COMMUNISM

Sir.—Mr Paul Hoffman is reported to have made a speech to students m Massachusetts warning them of the danger of Russia. Relying on the ancient dictum that everything unknown was great, he made the enigmatical statement that he had " convincing evidence that the Soviet Union was plotting to take over America after conquering the four other continents. That statement alone affords “ convincing evidence ” that Mr Hoffman is utterly ignorant of the Communist attitude and of the possibilities of Communism. For it would be impossible to make a country Communist bv conquering it. for Communism requires the active participation of the community in the administration of its economic life. Mr Hoffman also says that present-day Communism has forsaken tne doctrines of Marx and Lenin for a creed wanting in decency, truth, and integrity. As a matter of fact, modern Russian leaders never lose touch with the writings of Marx, which they constantly revise, and keep alive in their consciousness.— I am. '"etc., H. Gow. Balclutha.
