DRINK IN CENTRAL OTAGO
Sir, —Your article on after-hour trading in Central Otago is not untimely, as there is little doubt the peace of many homes throughout this province is spoiled by after-hour trading, not one night in the week, but every night. Apart from workers who could call before 6 p.m., a considerable number of the patrons are only in their teens. I, with other parents, have proved that personally. Apart from local culprits, visitors are the worst offenders. I am compelled to travel the Central Otago route regularly, and have found on occasions our night service uncomfortable because a certain element insisted on drinking and stopping at hotels. Surely pressure could be brought to bear against taking liquor on the 5 p.m. Sunday bus from Dunedin.
As for the Central train, well, the control over drink is simply shocking. On the Dunedin-Cromwell train on December 26, for one example, the behaviour was scandalous, even to fighting. Inspectors should travel more often and see what conditions are. This line is not pleasant at .any time, without having the travelling public upset and annoyed with the results of drinking. The country constable admittedly is worked harder than the town constable, so why should his duties be made heavier by visiting hooligans?—l am, etc.. Eye-witness.
[The train and bus authorities point qjit that the consumption of liquor is forbidden and strict instructions have been issued. If breaches occur, specific complaints should be made to the author!, ties, so that investigations can be made —Ed., ODT.I
