AUSTRALIANS COLLAPSE

Rain-damaged Wicket Glorious Batting Debacle NZPA—Copyright Rec 7 p.m. CAPE TOWN, Jan. 21. The start of play in the second day of the third test between South Africa and Australia was delayed for 75 minutes because the wicket was not fit for play. South Africa then went in to add 78 runs for eight wickets in 122 minutes. Australia prolonged South Africa's innings as long as possible on the rain-damaged wicket to keep off it themselves. As a result, when South Africa’s first innings ended for 311, Australia had only 130 minutes to bat. However, Australia was routed for 75 in 127 minutes. They are 236 in arrears, and failed by 87 runs to save a follow on. In a glorious batting debacle, they exaggerated the terrors of the damaged wicket. The spinners, Tayfield and Mann, wrecked Australia for their lowest score against South Africa, the previous lowest being 153 in Melbourne in 1931-32. Eric Rowan batted for 388 minutes and hit 14 fours. Tayfield had the crowd wild with joy when he bagged three wickets in one over and the Australian wickets continued to crash. Loxton, the only batsman w’ho made any attempt at hits, got two fours. Scores: — SOUTH AFRICA First Innings Eric Rowan, cW.
