EMPIRE GAMES TEAM
MEMBERS TENDERED SOCIAL FUNCTION Two officials at the Empire Games, to be held at Auckland next month, and one woman competitor, all members ot the firm o£ Mackintosh Caley Phoenix, Ltd., were met by the managing director, Mr St. Clair Ferguson, and fellow-mem-bers of the staff at a pleasant social function in the manager's office yesterday afternoon, when tributes were paid by various speakers to their selection for the games
The member of the Otago section of the New Zealand athletic team was Miss Yvette Williams, New Zealand shot putt, broad jumD and javelin champion and record holder for the shot and broad jump events. The others were administrators. Mr J. W. Holley is manager of the New Zealand Empire Games team and president of the New Zealand Amateur Athletic Association, and Mr W. N. Connell is one of the two masseurs to the Dominion track and field team. Mr Ferguson referred to the pleasure of the company at having three members of the firm represented in an official capacity at the games, and wished Miss Williams success in her events. Mr Holley replied on behalf of the three guests of honour. They will leave on Monday for Auckland.
Mr C. K. Heaton, a former vice-presi-dent of the Otago branch of the NZAAA, who will also travel to the games in an unofficial capacity, was associated in the function.
