WOMEN’S HOSTEL
WORKERS IN INDUSTRY ESTABLISHMENT AT VAUXHALL The Government hostel at Vauxhall has been opened for general boarding purposes for women and girls engaged in industry in Dunedin. The hostel was first made available for several women immigrants included in the recent draft from England. The decision to make it available for boarders has brought Dunedin into line with Auckland, Wellington and Christchurch. All three places have women’s hostels. Mr P.C.K. Thomson, the Otago immigration officer, told the Daily Times that the hostel would cater especially for girls living in the country who wished to work in Dunedin. He said there were many girls living in country districts who would like to work 'in the city if they could get suitable board. The hostel should answer their requirements.
Dunedin is the second city in the South Island to have a boarding hostel for women, the other one being at Christchurch. Mr Thomson emphasised that the accommodation at the Vauxhall was very good. Although clearing work was still being completed about the grounds, he thought it would not be long before the establishment would be completed. At present, the hostel has accommodation for 45 people, including the staff, but the Government has properties adjoining the area and they will be used later to take up to 80 people. Although the hostel is about t%vo miles from the city, Mr Thomson said that a bus service had been started and transport went past the gate. He did not think that it would take long for the hostel to be filled, as boarding problems in Dunedin were acute.
