SWIMMING TEAM
BRITISH EMPIRE GAMES FOUR OTAGO COMPETITORS PA AUCKLAND, Jan. 3. Ten women and 13 men have been selected for the New Zealand swimming team to compete in the British Empire Games at Auckland next month. The choice was announced at the final session of the New Zealand championships in the Olympic pool, Newmarket, tonight. The team is:— Women 110 Yards Freestyle.—Kristin Jacobi (Auckland), aged 18, . university student; Norma Bridson (Auckland), 21, pharmacist; Winifred Griffin (Auckland), 17, schoolgirl. 440 Yards Freestyle.—Helen Mackenzie (Auckland), 19, university student; Winifred Griffin. 220 Yards Breaststroke. —Margaret Sweeney (Auckland), 20, dressmaker. 110 Yards Backstroke.—Jean Stewart (Otago), 19, student teacher. 4 x 100 Yards Freestyle Relay.— Kristin Jacobi, Norma Bridson, Winifred Griffin, Joan Hastings (Auckland), 24, botanist; Helen Mackenzie, reserve. Divers.—Joyce Carpenter (Nelson), 26 physical education instructor; Mayzod Reid (Otago), 21, telephone operator; Betty Moore (Otago), 20, university student. „ _ , The 3 x 100 Yards Medley Relay team will be selected from the swimmers already named. Men 110 Yards Freestyle.—Lyall Barry (West Coast), 23, physical education instructor; Michael Amos (Auckland), 18, clerk; Peter Hanan (Waikato), 34, farmer. 440 ’ Yards Freestyle.—Frederick Lucas (Auckland), 19, shop assistant; Noel Chambers (Canterbury), 26, milk vendor; Michael Amos. 1650 Yards Freestyle.—Cohn Chambers (Canterbury), 23, milk vendor; Frederick Lucas. 220 Yards Breaststroke. John Shanahan (Auckland), 25, clerk; Trevor Eagle (Auckland), 17, schoolboy; Colin Callan (Auckland), 24, mechanic. „ 110 Yards Backstroke.— Roger Gibbs (Canterbury), 17, schoolboy; Peter Mathieson (Auckland), 35, detective. . Hanan, who competed in the 1938 British Empire Games, will be captain of the team. The manage/ will be Mr L. J. Moorhouse, of Christchurch, a New Zealand representative at the 1928 Olympic Games. The chaperone will be Mrs A. D. Bridson, of Auckland.
