Four were sentenced to 25 years’ imprisonment, and the other eight to terms ranging from two to 20 years’ corrective labour. The four who received the maximum sentence were: General Otozo Yamada, former Commander-in-Chief of the Kwangtung Army, Lieutenantgeneral Riuji Kajitsuka, of the Medical Corps, Takatsu Takahashi, of the Medical Services, and Kiyoshi Kawashima, a doctor said to have headed the germ warfare research unit 731.
During, the trial at Khabarovsk (Siberia), the Russians claimed' that the Japanese had planned large-scale germ warfare through the use of infected rodents, lice and animals.
