OTAGO OPENS POORLY
BRABIN SHIELD CRICKET CENTURY TO FARRANT FOR CANTERBURY PA CHRISTCHURCH, Dec. 30. Canterbury batted first in the Brafain Shield match against Otago which began at Hagley Park today, and after being one down for 40 and six down for 72 at different stages, D. R. Farrant and D. D. Wilson combined in a partnership which raised more than 80 runs. Farrant made 116 runs not out in 291 minutes. He played an invaluable innings and kept the side together when wickets were falling quickly, and it was mainly through his contribution that Canterbury made 262 runs.
