RECOGNISED BY BRITAIN

“ Adequate ” Merchant Navy For Japan

NZPA—Reuter—Copyright LONDON, Dec. 29. Britain recognises the need for Japan to have an “ adequate ” merchant navy, a Foreign Office spokesman said today. He added that it was Britain’s general view that the same limits imposed last autumn on Germany’s merchant navy should be broadly applied to Japan. He said that Britain had not yet been informed of the reported decisions of General MacArthur to remove certain existing limits on the type, size, and speed of Japanese merchant ships, and his authority for a new programme of construction with American financial aid. German Programme Begins A Berlin message says: The first six ships for Germany’s new merchant marine are now on the stocks. The first is expected to be ready next June. Construction follows the agreement which the three occupying Powers signed with the West German Republic last month.
