CLEARANCE DIFFICULTIES
NEW ZEALAND ATHLETE IN AUSTRALIA CERTAIN WINNER OF TITLE NZP A—Copyright ADELAIDE, Dec. 30. The New Zealander, Jackson Mahoney, who is representing New South Wales at the Australian athletic championships, may be banned by the Australian Amateur Athletic Union because advice of his clearance from the New Zealand Association has not been forwarded. On performances, Mahoney is regarded as the certain winner of the 880 Yards Australian title and a probable Australian representative at the Empire Games. The decision of the Australian Union has been postponed a few hours to enable the New South Wales delegate, Mr K. Donald, to produce evidence of Mahoney’s clearance. It is understood that Mahoney was cleared by the New Zealand Association three weeks ago, but Mr Donald says no notification to that effect has been received in Australia. He has sent a reply-paid cable to the New Zealand Association asking for clarification.
Team for Empire Games It was announced at the annual conference of the Athletic Union of Australia that £3200 was in hand for Empire Games team for New Zealand out of which 25 per cent, would have to be allocated for the Women’s on a basis of £IOO a member, the union had sufficient for 23 male athletes and a sectional manager. The conference decided to select 23 -athletes whose expenses would be the Empire Games rules, Australia could send 80 athletes, but the conference believed it was unlikely that the team would exceed 40.
