EIGHTY-FIVE YEARS AGO
FROM THE FILES OF THI ©taflo IDaflp Himes DUNEDIN, DECEMBER 31, 1864. The Celaeno is the sixth ship now laid on for a wool freight from this province, and the Lansdowne may be said to be the seventh, though her cargo will be shipped at Bluff harbour. Except for the Landsdowne. all are now loading. The following industrial anticipations are expressed in the Oamaru Times:—“We are glad to learn that it is probable the first manufactory will soon be established here. A gentleman —Mr Whitmore—is preparing to erect premises in proximity to the bridge in Thames street for brewing colonial ale and making aerated waters and cordials. The present excessive prices of these beverages is known to our readers, and are almost prohibitive. The establishment of a manufactory in this town of the nature mentioned, should lower the prices some 50 per cent; and while it will be an accommodation to the public, we think there. is reason to believe that it will be profitable to the spirited proprietor of our organisation.”
We have been informed that at Brighton, in this Province, there is a very curious phenomenon to be observed. By careful experiments it would appear to have been proved that the bathing place there is fed by warm springs that raise the temperature in it, on an average of 10 degrees higher than that of the sea. The temperature is not uniform, but, varying with the temperature of the air, it still keeps its greater height in comparison with that of other water. Is is supposed that in cases of swiftly running streams, especially if fed from high mountains, the difference of temperature would be much more perceptable, probably one of 20 degrees. It will hardly be credited that lately the thermometer' has stood in this water at 70 degrees, while in the air it was at 60, and in the sea at 58. We must not omit to add that the water here is generally warmer at the bottom than at the top, even on hot sunny days.
