NO REAPPEARANCE

POLIOMYELITIS EPIDEMIC SPORADIC CASES ONLY PA WELLINGTON, Dec. 30. There has been no reappearance so far this summer of the poliomyelitis epidemic which began in New Zealand in November, 1947, and tailed off about July of this year. Figures given by the Health Department today showed that an average of about three cases a week were still being reported, almost all in the Auckland and South Auckland districts. Some of these, however, are suspect cases only which do not prove definite, and the number of definite cases was said to be not above the sporadic occurrence of the disease which can be expected at any time.

The last fatal case reported was in Auckland in August. No cases have been reported in Wellington since July. In August, September, and October there were 21 definite cases of poliomyelitis, 14 of them in Auckland, 4 in South Auckland, 1 in Christchurch, and 2 in Timaru. During November, there were 11 notifications, all in Auckland, and in the first three weeks of this month there were nine notifications—eight in Auckland and one in South Auckland.
