COASTLINE CHARTING
SURVEY SHIP LACHLAN OPERATIONS TOWARDS BLUFF Special to the Daily Times WELLINGTON, Dec. 30. HMS Lachlan which is engaged on the task of recharting the New Zealand coastline, will leave on Monday morning to start work on the coastline between the Nuggets and Bluff, where many points have been wrongly fixed and the coastline as shown on existing charts is known to be as much as two miles out of position. The Lachlan is expected to be two or three months on this part of the coast. The survey ship will go first to Lyttelton, taking trucks and trailers for the shore operational side of the chartering of the coast. These will go south by road from Lyttelton, and the Lachlan will go to Foveaux Strait down the east coast. Some of the old trig stations are being, redefined by an officer of the Lands and Survey Department, who will also fix new points for use by the survey ship. While the work is being carried out, the shore party will maintain constant close touch with the ship. All necessary data has been supplied to the Lachlan by the Lands and Survey Department, which will have a draughtsman permanently on board to help draw the new charts. These charts will have all their geographical detail checked by departmental computers and will ultimately be published by the department.
