DAIRY HERDS

THE FARM

INCREASE RECORDED GREATER ACREAGE IN GRAINS According to the latest figures available from the Monthly Abstract of Statistics, the total number of dairy cows in milk in the Dominion shows an increase for the 1949 season over those for 1948 from 1,713,532 to 1,746,753. This latest total of dairy herds brings the number back to near that of 1942, when they were slightly over 10,000 more, but the number is still well below the figures recorded for the year 1936, when 1,803,000 cows were in milk. The sheep flocks of the Dominion, as at April 30, 1948, were 32,483,138/ While this figure shows a slight decrease over previous years back as far as 1944, they are well above the 193641 years. Figures for 1949 are not included in the Abstract. Wheat, oats and barley show an increase in acreages for this season.
