“SHOOT TO KILL”
EFFECTIVE DISCIPLINARY ORDER SEMARANG. When Indonesian Republican Army troops recently replaced Dutch forces in control of Semarang and Cheribon, their commander posted notices on public buildings warning that the soldiers had orders to shoot to kill “deliberate disturbers of the peace.” Within three days, declared Jogjakarta Radio, serious crime in these coastal towns had dropped to zero. Dutch Army units in the towns were “ surprised and pleased with the soldierly bearing and discipline ” of the Republican troops, added the radio commentator. —Reuter.
