FAT FOR BRITAIN
NEED STILL URGENT “We have had a splendid year and I am most grateful to you for your support and kindness,” states Mr Jonathan Lewis, direct.or of the Commonwealth Gift Centre, London, in a letter to Mr Philip Bariing expressing thanks for the gifts of fat from the women of Otago' and Southland. “ The messages from you have brought great encouragement and warmth to us across the world. Good luck to you and your supporters, and let’s make 1950 a real landmark.” This letter and scores of others received by air mail in the past week showed that there was still a great need for fat in Britain, Mr Barling told the Daily Times yesterday. No one would be more pleased than he would be if Dr Edith Summerskill’s recent comment on the fat situation were true, Mr Barling said, but the letters received showed that fat was still urgently required by the old and the needy. An old age pensioner wrote that she had made some pastry with dripping received under the scheme. It was “so different from the quarter pound of peariut and sunflower fat and about a teaspoonful from three tiny chops. One of Scotland’s leading women had also written stressing the need for more fat.
“The response from the women is still magnificent,” Mr Barling said. “ Sixty tins came in just before Christ, mas and a shipment of fat will go forward in January. We must not let up in giving the people of Britain their urgently needed fat and the moral support that goes with it.”
