GRIM BATTING

AUCKLAND RETRIEVES POSHION GAME AGAINST CANTERBURY PA CHRISTCHURCH, Dec. 26. The Plunket Shield match, between Auckland and Canterbury was in a particularly interesting position at the end of the second day’s play. On Saturday the Auckland batsmen failed to take advantage of a perfect batting wicket and were all out for 207. By Stumps, Canterbury had scored 113 for .two, and it consolidated this advantage today by taking its first inning’s score to 329. However, in the last two hours and a-half Auckland fought back grimly, and at stumps today, with two wickets down, the arrears of 122 had been made up.

, The only batsman to make an impression in Auckland’s first innings was the English professional, J. Hardstaff, who batted delightfully for 45 before playing on a ball from T. B. Burtt. The Canterbury bowling was little more than mediocre, but the Auckland batting was definitely weak. For Canterbury, J. G. Leggat, after painfully slow progress on the first evening, showed the best form of the morning and made 66, and a newcomer to Shield cricket. M. E. Chappie, batted solidly for 40. It was the sixth wicket partnership of 94 between Chappie and A. R. Mac Gibbon which

put Canterbury on top. Mac Gibbon, after an uncertain • start, batted brightly for 59. ‘ . The Auckland bowling was very much of the up and down variety, especially on the first day. This morning, J. Hollywood found he was able to turn off-breaks a little and bowled impressively at times. B. Donaldson, one of the many mediumpaced right-handers in the side, extracted some life from the pitch and got Leggat and F. B. Smith with excelent balls. . . ~ In Auckland's second innings, the colt, D. L. Perry, showed pleasing form, and the Auckland captain, V. J. Scott, was his usual dour, determined self. There is a suggestion that the wicket will not last out four days, and at the moment Auckland appears to have slightly the better position.
