STREETS THRONGED
CHEERFUL CROWDS CHRISTMAS EVE IN CITY The streets of Dunedin were thronged last night. Late shoppers hurrying in search of last-minute Christmas presents mingled with occasional revellers, while housewives were to be recognised by the purposeful manner in which they thrust through the crowd, bent on acquiring the final necessities for the four days of holidays which commence today. Many seemed tired by. the strenuous efforts involved in struggling through the crowd while laden with ; bulky parcels, and they occasionally did not seem to appreciate the cheerful bang of crackers which rang through the streets. Others, perhaps less heavily weighted with the worries of providing for the holiday period, exhibited the traditional spirit of Christmas. Paper hats and streamers on cars were popular festive emblems during the evening.
