FAVOURABLE GROWTH

Welcome Rainfall During Month

There has been a transformation in North Otago as some parts of the district have received over four inches of rain this month. Growing conditions are very favourable and there have been excellent strikes of rape, turnip, etc. Weather conditions for the most part have been fine this week.

Wheat.—Wheat crops have shown a considerable improvement during the week and while the final yields will be definitely affected, the recent good rains should produce a much better filled sample than otherwise would have been the case. The shipment of Australian wheat is now going into consumption and will be sufficient for local orders until the new harvest arrives.

Oats.—The Government announcement that the recent price order for white oats for the coming season has been revoked, will have a varying effect on the market and if the new crop is a good one, it is possible that the maximum price of 5s on trucks will not be maintained, as there is a fair carry-over in the South Island of last season’s oats. Odd sales have been made to the North Island this week of white oats, but the demand is not strong.

Chaff.—Better quality lines are difficult to obtain, and merchants are finding it difficult to secure good bright oaten sheaf quality to cover their orders. Seeds. —Most markets are firm with very little seed on offer and the main interest is centred round the prospects for new seeds crops. Weather conditions are very favourable for sowing all small seeds, and there has been a good demand for rape, turnip, chou mollier and grass seed.
