LAKE TRAGEDY
FOUR MAORIS DROWNED FISHING BOAT CAPSIZES PA TAUMARUNUI, Dec. 23. Four young Maori men lost their lives on Lake Roto Aira, in the National Park area, shortly after 5.30 yesterday afternoon. They were: Steve Banks (19), single, of Tokaanu. Manu Patcna (about 24), married, of Tokaanu. Gabriel Grace (about 21), of Tokaanu. Buddy Williams (about 22), of Ratana. The four men were fishing in a dinghy, and were putting out a net when the boat capsized. The mishap was seen from the shore by Raymond Healey, of Tokaanu, and others. They obtained a boat from a nearby bay on the lake shore, but by the time they got to the scene the four occupants of the dinghy had disappeared. Dragging continued all day for the bodies of the four men, and when a high wind and heavy seas caused the postponement of the operations tonight two bodies had been recovered and taken to Waiha Pa.
