EFFECTIVE DETERRENT HELD NECESSARY

PA WELLINGTON, Dec. 23. Ship desertion was on the increase said Mr D. J. Riddiford, when prosecuting on behalf bf a shipping company in the Magistrate’s Court today. He said such offences were becoming an ever-growing list in the court and looked like assuming the alanning proportions experienced earlier in the year. Some effective deterrent should be imposed to combat_ this wave of ship desertion, he submitted. In the case before the court Ernest Edward Alexander Turner pleaded guilty to deserting from the Wairangi on July 2. _ „ The magistrate, Mr J. S. Hanna, in imposing a fine of £4O, said that until the fine was paid Turner would remain under the supervision of the probation officer.
