ELIMINATION POSSIBLE

TOLL CHARGES ON SYDNEY HARBOUR BRIDGE

FEDERAL GOVERNMENT MOVE Rec. 11 p.m. CANBERRA, Dec. 22. Indications are that the toll charges on Sydney Harbour bndge may be wiped out by the Federal Government proyiding £410,000 a year from the petrol tax. Ministers are stated to be far more sympathetic towards this proposition than was the Chifley Government.

The petrol tax goes to the Federal authority, which makes grants to States for road improvement. Today half the motor vehicle licences in New South Wales are owned by Sydney residents, who are estimated to pay £3,000,000 annually in petrol tax. Stoppages on the bridge through the collection of tolls are alleged to result in the wastage of 350,000 gallons of petrol arinually.
