BLAIR ATHOL WINS

WOMEN’S MARCHING

KEEN COMPETITION The champion Blair Athol team added to its long list of successes when it won the Dunedin Marching Assiciation’s A Grade Championship at the Caledonian Ground on Saturday. It was the team’s third successive win in the championship. Two sections were contested, and teams from as far away as Christchurch and Invercargill travelled to Dunedin to take part. The standard was exceptionally high among the A Grade competitors, and many teams recently promoted from B Grade gave excellent displays. Blair Athol has five new members in its team, but the instructor, Mr Hugh Cameron, already has the members nearly up to the high standard of the combination of last year. Although the Grenadiers were about 20 points behind the leaders, the Invercargill team put on an excellent display to beat the strong Aotea com-

bination. The Grenadiers team was recently promoted to the A Grade, and under its leader, Miss T. Davis, has improved with every competition. The competition among the leading teams in the B Grade competition was strong. Green Island gave a very steady performance to beat DIC and Maybelle. There was keen competition for the position of champion leader. Miss Shirley Halley, of the St. Kilda Band team, gained a close decision over S. Pont (Aotea) and E. Hawker (Blair Athol), who were equal in second place. R. Haggitt was the successful leader in the B Grade and Ngaire Holland (Green Island) was a close second. Music was provided by the Burns Highland Pipe Band and the St. Kilda Municipal Brass Band. Results:— A Grade.—Blair Athol (453 i points) 1, Grenadiers (Invercargill, 433£ points) 2.
