UNUSUAL ACCIDENT

MAN DROWNED WHILE AQUAPLANING PA AUCKLAND, Dec. 18. Falling off the board while aquaplaning in Tauranga Harbour yesterday afternoon, a plumber was drowned. He was Harold Joseph Conchie, aged 30, a single man, of Jessie street, Wellington. His parents live in Napier. Mr Conchie’s body had not been recovered late to-day.

Mr Conchie was being towed by the Tauranga launch Nevada when he appeared to get into difficulties off Mount Beach, and fell off the board. The Nevada was put about immediately, and although it passed over the spot where Mr Conchie disappeared, he was not found. A number of spectators on the beach and the launch were watching the aquaplaning. The accident occurred in the Tauranga Channel, which is swept at times by a strong current, Mr Conchie was a returned sevrieeman. He was in Tauranga on holiday.
