VALLEY TEAM TAKES LEAD IN COMPETITION

CRICKET

Gaining its third outright win for the season, North-East Valley was in the lead in the Dunedin senior cricket competition when the fourth round of matches ended on Saturday. Grange moved up into second place, five points behind the leaders, with an outright win against Albion-YMCA. ,

University, which had shared first place with North-East Valley up to this stage, dropped to third by losing to Dunedin on the first innings. High School Old Boys moved into fourth place in the competition by beating Kaikorai outright.

Although the wickets appeared to be easy, in most cases the batsmen were unable to get on top of the bowling. The highest score of the day was made by J. O’Sullivan, of Dunedin, with 79. J. A. Robertson, of Old Boys, scored 75. L. B. Graham, another Dunedin batsman, made 58.

I. W. Gallaway scored 50 for Carisbrook, and the Kaikorai veteran, G. McGregor, followed his 40 on the first day with a good 46, thus achieving, the best batting double.

Among the many good bowling performances. that of J. Valentine (Carisbrook), who took four for 9 off 19 overs, was the best. For Grange, T. A. Freeman took four for 26, giving him nine for 58 in both innings, and I. W. Payne did well to take four for 14. The most wickets on the day fell to D. A. Morrison (University), who took seven for 72. The results of the games completed on Saturday were:—

North-East Valley, 212 and 135, defeated Carisbrook, 162 and 156, by 29 runs. Dunedin, 220, defeated University 127 and 109, by 93 runs on the first innings. Grange, 251, defeated AlbionYMCA, 134 and 84. by an innings and 33 runs. High School Old Boys, 317 and 38 for one wicket, defeated Kaikorai, 156 and 198, by nine wickets. Positions of Teams

The points and, positions of the teams now are: Ndrth-East Valley 32, Grange 27, University 23, High School Old Boys 18, Carisbrook 12, Dunedin 7, Albion-YMCA 6, Kaikorai 2.
