Mr Trygve Lie, Secretarygeneral of the United Nations, who, according to usually reliable sources, is expected to announce that he will not be a candidate for re-election when his five-year term expires on February 1, 1951. Some United Nations delegates speculated that Dr H. V. Evatt might be interested in the post, particularly since the Australian Labour Government’s defeat involved his resignation as External Affairs Minister. Observers believed, however, that Russia certainly would veto Dr Evatt’s condidacy.—New York, December 15.
