REDUCED BY HALF
SUPPLY OF CIGARETTES TWO BRANDS AFFECTED Supplies of two brands of popular cigarettes have been reduced by half the normal quantity for December in Dunedin, according to advice received by city wholesalers. The reason for this cut is stated to be the difficulty manufacturers are having in keeping up the supply of cartons and packaging as the demand for cigarettes continues to increase. January will again be a harassing month for the smokers of the city. It is probable that the normal requirements will be forwarded to the wholesalers, but half the quantity will be distributed to retailers at the normal time, while the remainder of the monthly “ ration ” will not be available until the end of the month. Although only two brands of cigarettes are affected, the frustrated smokers of these -particular brands will take their toll of the preferences of others and thus spread the shortage over the whole market. A measure of relief will be brought by the periodic arrival of imported cigarettes, some of which are now on city tobacconists’ shelves.
