BANANAS ARRIVE

FIRST-CLASS CONDITION. IN SHOPS NEXT WEEK For the first time in many years, the Maui Pomare landed a direct shipment of fruit from the Islands in the South Island this week. Bananas from the shipment have reached Dunedin in firstclass order, and they should be available to the public about the middle of next week. The fruit is at present ripening. The Maui Pomare also brought pineapples, a few of which reached Dunedin. Peaches, cherries and apricots are now coming into tfiie marts steadily, and choice quality fruit has been m keen demand. Supplies of tomatoes from Kakanui, Christchurch and Nelson continue to be steady, prices being on a par with those of last week. There has been a poor demand for gooseberries, which are in heavy supply. Strawberries for dessert and jam purposes are in good supply, while raspberries, pottled and in buckets, are meeting with a brisk sale. There is a steady inquiry for cucumbers. The market is bare of lemons, and the few New Zealand oranges which arrived at ths week-end were cleared. Practically all lines of vegetables are in heavy supply. Prices for green peas are low. Good quantities of potatoes from Outram and Kakanui are selling at the new price of 2-Jd lb. Brokers’ floors were cleared at the week-end. Range of Prices New Zealand poorman oranges, 35s case; New Zealand sweet oranges, 355. New Zealand lemons: Town, 25s 3d; country, 24s 3d; cases, 6d extra. Bananas: Fijian and Samoan, 31s case. Tomatoes: Local, 2s lb. Christchurch, Is 3d to 2s. ■ Nelson: Green, Is to Is 4d. Cherries: Choice, 2s 6d to 3s; others, 9d to Is 6d.

Grey River.-LFor the period ended December 13, the dredge worked 253 hours over 157,000 yards to obtain 267.90 z of bullion. The November figures were 547 hours, 331,000 yards, 780.420 z.
