ujordl God 1 She of " WE ARE CONFIDENT, I SAY. AND WILLING RATHER TO BE ABSENT FROM THB. BODY AND TO BE PRESENTf'wiTH THE LORD” (2 Cor. 5: 6-8.) . .The doctrine ot the immortality of the *oul is not a Bible doctrine—it is a doctrine of Pagan origin. Briefly, the Bible teaches that all men die, both Christians and non-Christians alike, and when dead are really dead and know nothing (Roms 5: 12, Ecc. 9: 5. Psa. 6: 5, Psa. 115: 17, Psa. 146: 3-4). The true Christian, however, will at the return of Christ to earth be raised from the dead and will be made immortal, i.e.. he wil become possessed of an immortal physical body (1 Thess. 4: 16, 1 Cor. 15: 12-23, Rev. 20: 6, 1 Cor. 15: 51-54. Phil. 3: 20-21. Luke 20: 35-36). He will THEN be " present with the Lord.” for he will reign with the Lord in the Kingdom of God Christ will establish on earth when He comes (Rev. 11: 15, Acts 17: 31, Matt: 25- 34. 2 Tim. 2: 12, Rev. 20: 6. Rev. 5: 9-10, Rev. 2: 26-27, 1 Cor. 6: 2). It follows, therefore, that believers will not be “ absent ” from this present mortal body and “ present with the lord ” until Christ returns to the earth and they becoming possessed of the immortal body promised. Hence Paul could write of believers. “ Whilst we. are at home in the body (i.e.. whilst we'remain with a mortal body) we are absent from the Lord.” but when we are " absent from the body ” (i.e.. no longer mortal, but immortal) we shall be ” present with the Lord.” The Apostle Paul certainly never contemplated the Idea of disembodied immortal souls, without. “ body, parts, or passions." being with Christ in Heaven. Actually, there is no such thing as immortal soul, no such thine as disembodied life. The Scriptures teach in plain terms that man is mortal, subject to death because of sin. that when death takes place a man ceases to live and from thenceforward is not alive anywhere until the resurrection of the dead. All go to one place at death. The state of the dead is an unconscious state, likened to sleep. Many of those now dead will not be the subjects of resurrection, but will " sleep a perpetual sleep ” At death the spirit,, or " life,” returns to God in every case, irrespective of the conduct of the man whilst alive. The body, or ” dust,” returns to the earth. Whilst spirit, or "life,” animates a flesh and blood dust-formed bodv man continues to be ” a living soul.” In the separation of ” spirit ” and " body,” or " life ” and “ dust ” at death, the «living soul ” ceases to be. The Scriptures never speak of an " immbrtai soul.” tlie life of all #esh is in (Be blood, but not a "never-dying soul” within the body. FREE BIBLE TRUTH LITERATURE. Address: P.O. Box 857, .Dunedin.
