LONDON POWER STRIKE
Early Ending Expected
Leaders Reach Agreement NZPA—Copyright LONDON, Dec. 14. The power strike which has disrupted London transport and industry in the last two days is expected to end tomorrow. Day-long talks between the leaders of 2700 strikirig power station workers and union leaders have ended in an agreement to settle the strike. The strikers, at a mass meeting tomorrow, will hear their recommendation to start work. Early today a meeting of 1500 Barking station strikers decided unanimously to continue the strike. Six hundred strikers' at another- station urged the Strike Committee to demand a 7j per cent, bonus for all employees and neHv entrants
Meanwhile, trade union leaders and shop stewards representing the strikers have made a call for an immediate return to work. It is believed that the strikers’ leaders will recommend to the men that they rely on legal negotiating machinery to settle their grievances. Early this evening the Electricity Authority announced power cuts up to 5 per cent, in several parts of England and Wales. In the House of Commons several Ministers expressed fears that Britain’s export effort might be seriously affected by the strike. The unofficial strike in the London area power stations is universally condemned by the press. The Labour Daily Herald says: “ There is not the slightest excuse for it,” and adds: “ In the name of common sense and responsibility, we urge the strikers to go back.” The Daily Telegraph says: “This despicable stoppage in one of the most vital of all public services has been started at the very moment when negotiations on the wage issue in dispute were on the point of being concluded to the complete satisfaction of all trade unions concerned. Even the Communist president of one of the unions has condemned the strike.” The News-Chronicle says the strike“cannot be defended bn any score,” and adds that the men have not the slightest excuse for failing to return to work immediately.
