UNION WITH EUROPE
Britain Not Considering
Detachment
Assurance To France NZPA—Copyright
Rec. 8 p.m. PARIS, Dec. 15. The British Ambassador, Sir Oliver Harvey, told a gathering of French diplomatic correspondents yesterday that he was astonished that the French press still solemnly discussed the possibility, and even the probability, of Britain detaching herself from Europe to join with the United States. Britain had, in fact, many points of intimate association with the United States but not more than she had with France and Western Europe. With Britain bound as much to Western Europe as to the Commonwealth and the Atlantic Treaty, and with France also a member of the Atlantic Treaty, he could not see how it was possible to continue to speak of Britain leaving Europe in favour of the United States. Sir Oliver added that it was only by the intimate union of Western Europe, the Commonwealth and the United States that the peace and prosperity of all could be guaranteed.
