INTERNATIONAL CITY
Proposal For Jerusalem
Recommended
Vote In United Nations Rec. 9 p.m. NEW YORK, Dec. 7.
The Special Political Committee of the United Nations today recommended that Jerusalem be made an international city. The vote was 35 to 13, with 11 abstentions. The United States and Britain voted with Israel against the resolution. The committee also voted by 32 to 16, with 11 abstentions, to designate the Trusteeship Council as the administering authority. Russia, which has a seat on the Trusteeship Council, supported the resolution. The vote in committee was more than the twothirds majority required for final approval in the Assembly later this week. The resolution for internationalisation was drafted by Australia. Among the nations supporting it were Britain, the United States, and Israel, and opposing it were South Africa, Norway and Sweden. The abstentions included New Zealand, Canada, India, and the Netherlands.
The committee endorsed the principle that Jerusalem should be placed under a “ permanent international regime under the United Nations.” The resolution asks that the Trusteeship Council will not allow any actions taken by an “an interested Government or Governments ” to divert ■ it from adopting and implementing the statute for Jerusalem.
