MR JONES WINS

ST. KILDA SEAT MAJORITY REDUCED OTHER OFFICIAL COUNTS Mr P. Jones (Labour) has retained the St. Kilda seat by a final majority of 331 votes over Mr Gerald Lyon (National). Mr Jones’s provisional majority after the voting last week was 397. The official count yesterday revealed that Mr Lyon, out of 1141 new votes counted, won 65 more votes than his opponent. The official counts in the Dunedin Central and North Dunedin electorates reduced Mr P. G. Connolly’s majority by 61 votes and Mr R. Walls’s by 19. The St. Kilda final result was:— Mr Jones 7310 Mr Lyon 6979 Informal 65

The results of the new voting were: —Absentee: Mr Jones 337, Mr Lyori 362. Declaration: Mr Jones 24, Mr Lyon 24. Postal: Mr Jones 173, Mr Lyon 213. Eight informal votes were cast.

Mr Connolly’s majority was reduced by-61 votes on the official count, his final majority being 989, compared with 1050 on the provisional count. Of the absentee, postal and declaration votes received, Mr David Murdoch, the National candidate, won 603 and his Labour opponent 586. The final figures were:—Mr Connolly 6813, Mr Murdoch 5824; informal 69. Details of the new votes were:—Absentee: Mr Connolly 352, Mr Murdoch 391, Postal: Mr Connolly 187, Mr Murdoch 183. Declaration: Mr Connolly 47. Mr Murdoch 29. Nine informal votes were cast.

In the North Dunedin final 'count, the majority of Mr Walls (Labour) was reduced by 19 votes over his National opponent, Mr R. G. Brickell. In the official count, Mr Walls received 7190 votes to his opponent’s '6522. Out of 1364 new votes. Mr Brickell won 725 and Mr Walls 618.
