HOLIDAY RACING

RICCARTON TRAINERS' PLANS

Special to the Dally Times

CHRISTCHURCH, Dec. 8. Canterbury will have a strong team of riders on the West Coast this week. It is expected that C. T. Wilson, A. J. Stokes. C. Stokes, C. McDonald, N. A. Crombie, R. W. Gould, A. M.. Ellis. M. R. Jones, I. McClure, and W. D. Skelton will make the trip to ride at Reefton on Saturday. J. S. Shaw will leave tonight on his way to Auckland, taking three-year-old colt Beaumaris and the two-year-old filly Pastel, the winners of the New Zealand Derby and Welcome Stakes respectively at the recent Riccarton meeting. Beaumaris has an engagement in the Auckland Cup before he has another clash with Bhutan in the Great Northern Derby while Pastel has a choice of two races on the first day, these being the Great Northern Foal Stakes and a handicap, in which she is top weight with 9.7. L. J. Ellis has arranged to take the four-year-old Resolute north for hack engagements at the Auckland Racing Club's summer meeting. He had two races here, leading most of the way in a mile race and then winning at seven furlongs. He is a useful galloper, who may continue to show good form up to a mile. M. J. Wadley has his plans well In hand for racing Swavup at the Auckland meeting. His Riccarton form was consistent, as he was second In the Stewards’ and Members’ Handicaps, his only starts. He has brilliant speed, while he is a very game colt, who may be better suited by the turning Ellerslie track than by the long straight at Riccarton.

Trafalgar Day was sent north this week when T. L. Jennings returned home to Qpakl, after racing The Laird at the Canterbruy Jockey Club's meeting. Trafalgar Day was trained for some time by L. J. Ellis at Riccarton, and he won a race at Motukarara a few weeks ago. He failed to show much form In his races at the recent Riccarton meeting, but he will have more races of a suitable nature in ’the southern part of the North Island than are available for him here. Trafalgar Day has been nominated for the Manawatu meeting. Personality is under a cloud just now. His knees are a source of trouble, and L. J. Ellis will restrict him to light tasks, there being no intention of racing him for some time.
