TEACHING APPOINTMENTS
Sir.—lt has been stated In the Daily Times that there' is a scarcity o£ school teachers. May I point out where no scarcity exists? Secondary English and social study teachers are now so plentiful that it is almost impossible to obtain a post anywhere. I have applied to more than 24 boards with no success in spite of a good teaching record. Since others, besides myself, are also experiencing difficulty I feel that the facts should be given wide publicity. Science teachers can still obtain posts, but owing to the fact, I think, of boards employing married women teachers whose husbands are also earning, English and social study positions are filled by these, since few women take to science easily, and not by male teachers—some ‘ of whom have, or are likely to have, families to support.—l am, etc., , Stephen Powell, 8.A., Dip. Ed. Balclutha.
