GALE IN AUCKLAND
WIDESPREAD DAMAGE GARDENS SUFFER HEAVILY PA AUCKLAND, Dec. 8. A 60-mile-an-hour gale, the climax to a week’s bad weather, ripped across Auckland early this morning, reaching a peak before 8 o’clock and leaving a battered city behind.it. The damage, though of a minor nature, is widespread. Gardens suffered badly, and fruitgrowers and market gardeners lost Heavily. , The maximum gust recorded at Mechanics Bay was 61 m.p.h. at 7.15 a.m. North Shore dwellers had the roughest, trip across the harbour for months.. One, Terry heeled over under the \ .force of : the gale, sending its bottom lee rail under water and shipping a sea which- soaked many passengers. Women screamed, thinking the boat was about -to overturn. # • Traffic was obstructed in the city until’ workmen cleared away a. tall poplar, which' crashed on to Princes Street. No serious road blockages were reported in the province. The harbour was too rough for the Tasman plane to take off, and two departures will be made tomorrow morning. The internal air services operated as usual, though south-bound planes had to fight strong winds.
