IMMENSE VALUE

WOMEN’S EDUCATION

ST. HILDA’S COLLEGIATE SCHOOL . The immense value of a university education to a young woman was emphasised last night by Professor G. R. Manton when delivering the main address at the annual break-up ceremony of St. Hilda’s Collegiate School. The ceremony was held before a large audience in the Dunedin Concert Chamber. Bishop Fitchett occupied the chair. Professor Manton said that if a girl was keen on having a university education and she was capable of doing the work, the greatest gift her parents could give her was the gratification of her wish.

“Educate a mah and you educate an individual, but educate a woman and you educate a family,” Professor Manton said. He did not agree entirely with the epigram he quoted, but he felt that there was much truth in it. He thought that most people

were inclined to have a limited outlook on the education of women. Many people deplored the fact that a girl would go through university and marry after graduation, but Professor Manton emphasised that it was a narrow view to adopt.

Professor Manton aptly concluded his remarks with a second epigram: “It takes two women to shape a man —first his mother and then his wife.” Awards to the winners of various competitions were presented by Mrs Manton. The school rose and gave three cheers for the junior and senior duxes of the school. Robin Insall and Cecily Shortt respectively. After the ceremony songs were presented by the school choir.
