FINE CROSSBRED WOOL WELLINGTON AUCTIONS MEDIUM GRADE FIRM PA WELLINGTON, Dec. 7. The official report issued by the Wellington Woolbrokers’ Association in conjunction with the New Zealand Woolbuyers’ Association and the New Zealand Wool Disposal Commission states:— The first Wellington wool sale of the 1949-50 season was held to-day. Catalogues totalled 31,420 bales of new season’s wool and there was no offering from the stock pile. The bulk consisted of good top-making and spinners’ wools, with 10 per cent, of paper felt wools suitable for the Continent also included. Oddments, many of them from hogget wool, were on the fine side, the majority being suitable for scouring. Growers, taking advantage of the favourable weather, had in many instances shorn earlier than usual. This resulted in a fair proportion of the wools being not fully grown. Competition was steady and well spread. The principal buying power rested with the continent, France in particular lifting a greater weight than previously. Bradford was generally on the edge of the market and picked up a small proportion. The United States was also active.
Compared with recent rates, extra fine and fine crossbreds advanced a shade. Medium crossbreds, although slightly erratic, may be' quoted firm. It is noticeable that in these medium wools there was little or no premium for good style lots. Coarse crossbreds, under strong American competition, advanced 10 per cent, and skirtings were fully firm. The official range
